With the legalization of non-medical cannabis in Canada looming, the Addictions Foundation of Manitoba released a position statement on the topic earlier this week.

The statement was approved by the AFM's Board of Governors after an extensive consultation process with both external and AFM health and addictions experts.

AFM Knowledge Lead, Dr. Sheri Fandrey says she thinks that the focus shouldn't be on the profit that is made from cannabis.

"We're just recommending that, whatever level of government, provincial or federal, that regulations take into account the necessary checks and balances for safety, rather than really focusing on a financial profit kind of motive."

AFM projects that legalization could lead to increased use of cannabis, and, subsequently lead to
increased demand for addiction treatment services.
