A medication used to fight opioid overdoses is now available for free at nine sites in Manitoba.
The sites are in Winnipeg, Gillam, Flin Flon, Thompson, Selkirk, Pine Falls, and The Pas.
Dauphin Clinic Pharmacy pharmacist Barrett Prochysyn says the DCP carries the kits, but as of yet they are only free for those covered under First Nations Inuit Health with a valid prescription.
"We are still waiting for the province to announce some sort of funding through pharmacies. Pharmacies have said they're willing to help out, they've approached the Manitoba government," says Prochyshyn.
A naloxone distribution program called Street Connections was launched by the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority last year. The province says as more sites offer the kits, contact information will be added to the Street Connections website.
