Vehicle insurance premiums are going up in Manitoba, but not by as much as MPI had requested.

Basic compulsory motor vehicle premiums will see an overall general rate increase of 3.7 per cent as of March 1st, 2017.

Manitoba Public Insurance had initially asked for a 4.3 per cent increase, but the Public Utilities Board determined the corporation hadn't proved why such an increase was necessary.

According to MPI, a 3.7 per cent overall general rate increase does not mean that rates for all motorists within each major class will experience a rate adjustment. Adjustments to specific classifications of vehicles are determined based on MPI's rate design.
