Work has started in the Clear Lake area for the removal of trees planted on native grasslands more than 50 years ago.
The trees are considered highly flammable, increasing the threat to property in the surrounding area.
Fire Technician for Riding Mountain National Park, Reade Tereck says this year's project will concentrate on two areas.
"The fuel-reduction project for the Wasagaming townsite is really to reduce fuel loads around the townsite of Wasagaming, to protect the townsite from any threat from fire. It's going on in two main areas this year, one's at the end of Ta-Wa-Pit on Highway 10, another one is just below the hill just after Columbine Drive."
RMNP feels that by restoring the area to grasslands, wildfires can be more safely controlled.
