Fishermen in the province will have the option of flexible markets in 2017.

The fisheries envoy and the Manitoba government are planning community meetings to obtain input from fishers and stakeholders towards the transition.

Vice President of the WMM Fish Co-op, Frank Kenyon says the issue of employment insurance has been raised in the past.

"The major issue that has been in the past is that some fresh water officials have -- and some politicians to -- stated that if the monopoly of fresh water has ended there won't be no more EI to the fishermen, but this is not the case what so ever, that's a false statement... the provincial conservatives have promised us that they would make it law that all fishermen would have to pay EI."

The next meeting is tonight at 6 pm, at the Chief Peter Beardy Memorial Center in Grand Rapids.
