Manitoba Justice System Given Lowest Grade of All Provinces

A public policy think-tank is giving Manitoba's justice system the worst grade in Canada.

A new report from the MacDonald-Laurier Institute gives Manitoba a 'C' grade, which is the lowest amongst the provinces and ties with Yukon and the Northwest Territories for last place.

Report co-author Ben Perrin says massive court backlogs mean criminal cases take longer to finish in Manitoba than anywhere else in the country.

Alberta and Saskatchewan both earned C plus grades.

Chief Won't Run for NDP Leader

A former Manitoba cabinet minister has decided not to run for the leadership of the provincial New Democrats.

Kevin Chief says he is focusing on spending time with his young family and on serving his constituents in the Point Douglas area of Winnipeg.

Chief was first elected in 2011 and held ministerial portfolios including children and youth opportunities and jobs and the economy.

He had been touted as a possible replacement for Greg Selinger, who announced his resignation as NDP leader when the party lost the provincial election in April.

The party, which now holds 14 of the 57 legislature seats, is planning to hold a leadership convention next September, and there are no contestants so far.
