As the fall season approaches, Manitoba fishermen will be looking for new ways to sell their fish.

Earlier this month, the Manitoba government informed the Government of Canada that it would be withdrawing its participation from the Freshwater Fish Marketing Act.

Director for Lake Winnipegosis, Manitoba and St. Martin (WMM) Fish Co-Op, Frank Kenyon says this opportunity will allow fishermen to market other species of fish.

He added, "It will open up our lesser valued fish... fishermen now can fish them, sell them and make money on them."

Kenyon also said, "We're going to improve our lakes by targeting the other utilized fish and less of the upper valued fish."

The province says this is the first step toward allowing Manitoba fishers the opportunity to market their own products outside of the province.
