It's something to really look into and consider, but the benefits of it could help hundreds of Manitobans and thousands of Canadians.

At any given time there are about 200 people in Manitoba on the wait list for a kidney, lung, heart or liver transplant says Physician with Transplant Manitoba Gift for Life Program, Dr. Faisal Siddiqui

The decision to become an organ donor is a personal choice, but it should be discussed with your family and friends.

"You kind of want to give your family the knowledge that you would want to donate in a situation where you could save a life." says Siddiqui. "If you are in the position where you could be a donor ultimately it is your family that will be asked for permission so start that conversation."

Manitobans are six times more likely to be a recipient than they are to be a donor.

"One donor can actually save the lives of up to eight people. And with tissue donation they can even improve the life of up to 75 other people. So, the gift of donation is something that can help literally dozens of people."
