Manitoba Homeless Units

A new housing unit has opened in a Manitoba city to support the homeless.

The Canadian Mental Health Association took the wraps off their new five-plex unit in Brandon this week. Regional Manager Glen Kruck says people can stay for up to three years, and the rent is subsidized to make the units affordable.

Kruck says if someone is a good renter, the association has over 60 other properties in the city they can move into if their three-year limit expires.

Manitoba Children Trauma

Theo Fleury and over a dozen supporters walked from the Forks to the Manitoba Legislative Building yesterday to raise awareness for children who have suffered traumatic events or have been sexually abused.

The former NHL payer started Victor Walk three years ago when he and his team trekked from Toronto to Ottawa. The purpose was to send a message to abuse survivors that they are not alone and that help is available.

Organizer Janet Renault says they hope the work of Victor Walk will lead others to open up or understand there is a safe space where they can share their stories.

Saskatchewan Oil Spill

Officials in Saskatchewan are preparing as oil from a pipeline leak makes it way along a major river towards a city of more than 35 000 people.

Sam Ferris with Saskatchewan's water security agency says Prince Albert gets most of its water from the North Saskatchewan River, and staff there are getting ready to shut down the intakes when oil flows past the city.

Ferris says there's also stored reservoirs to draw from, and the backup supplies should last seven days. Oil and other material leaked into the river from a breach in Husky Energy's pipeline near Maidstone, Saskatchewan, on Thursday.

Turkey Military Coup

Turkish media is reporting a Canadian man is being detained under the belief he was involved in the recent coup attempt.

Davud Hanci is a dual Canadian and Turkish citizen who lives in Calgary and works as an imam for Correctional Service Canada and Alberta correctional services.

But a family friend says the Turkish reports claim he is from Pennsylvania and was working for US based cleric Fethullah Gulen, whom Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan accuses of planning the coup.

Global Affairs says the department is aware of a Canadian dual-citizen detained in Turkey and Canadian consular officials are standing ready to assist if needed.

Munich Shooting

Investigators looking into the mass shooting in Munich say the gunman spent more than a year preparing his attack.

Bavarian investigator Robert Heimberger says the 18-year-old shooter visited the site of a previous school shooting in the German town of Winnenden and took photographs.

He says the shooter, who likely got his illegal weapon through the Internet's "dark net" market, was an avid player of first-person shooter video games, including "Counter-Strike: Source."

A spokesman for Munich prosecutor's office says there is still no evidence of any political motivation to the crime, nor that the shooter killed specific victims.
