Police Say Motorcycle Loses Control Trying to Avoid Vehicle at Brandon Perimeter

Two people suffered serious injuries in a motorcycle crash on Highway 1 just outside Brandon yesterday.

A call came in to Brandon police around 6:20 last evening.

Police say a motorcycle carrying two people was heading east and had to take evasive action when a vehicle merged onto Highway 1 from Brandon's 18th Street North, and tried changing into the median lane.

The motorcycle lost control and crashed. The 63-year-old male driver is in a Winnipeg hospital with serious injuries. His 63-year-old female passenger has serious but non-life threatening injuries.

A 32-year-old driver has been charged under the Highway Traffic Act.

Survey Finds Many Canadian Farmers are Stressed and Anxious

Early findings of a study out of the University of Guelph suggests farmers are quite susceptible to mental health issues like stress, depression, and anxiety -- particularly Canadian farmers.

Janet Smith, manager of Manitoba Farm, Rural and Northern Supports Services, says it's been known for years that farmers are under a great deal of stress, but the numbers are surprising.

"You know, they were talking about things like 45 per cent of the farmers surveyed in this study of 1,100 farmers across Canada had very high stress levels, and they also said that close to 60 per cent of those surveyed had anxiety."

The data was analyzed by Professor Andria Jones-Bitton with the University of Guelph's Department of Population Medicine, who looked at more than 1,100 responses to an online stress and resilience survey for producers done from September 2015 to January.

Province Consulting Public on Cosmetic Pesticides Ban

The provincial government wants Manitobans to weigh in on the cosmetic pesticide ban on chemicals used to kill weeds growing in lawns.

An online survey has been made public for people to give their experiences with the Non-Essential Use of Pesticides Regulation passed in 2015.

Sustainable Development Minister Cathy Cox says the purpose of the legislation is to reduce the exposure of people and pets to herbicides used in lawn care.

She says the Conservative government is committed to finding the balance between protecting the environment and providing good-looking green spaces in the province's communities.

Manitoba Highway Named After Former Premier

A stretch of Manitoba's Highway 10 -- from the International Peace Garden on the U-S border to Riding Mountain National Park -- will now be known as the John Bracken Highway.

Manitoba Premier Brian Pallister says it's a fitting tribute to Bracken, the province's longest-serving premier.

Bracken -- a Conservative -- was premier from 1922 to 1943 and represented The Pas in the Manitoba legislature.

He also spent five years as leader of the federal Conservative party, chaired a royal commission on Manitoba's liquor laws and wrote two books on farming in western Canada.
