Canada Post Gives 72-Hour Lockout Notice
The mail could stop flowing on Friday, now that Canada Post has issued a 72-hour lockout notice to the Canadian Union of Postal Workers.
In a statement early today, the Crown corporation said it plans to suspend the collective agreement as of Friday, citing prolonged negotiations, the union's strike mandate and the financial cost of a rapid decline in mail volume.
Canada Post said the 72-hour notice doesn't necessarily mean it will shut down Friday -- but rather, will allow it to take steps to respond to what it calls "the changing business reality.''
CUP-W accuses the corporation of driving 50,000 workers out onto the streets without pay in an effort to impose steep concessions on them.

Another Patient Wanders Off from Winnipeg's Grace Hospital
A Winnipeg hospital says it will keep its psychiatric ward locked at all times after another patient walked out without anyone knowing where he went.
The young man, who was in Grace hospital, was found unharmed by police a few hours later.
It comes nearly two months after a 60-year-old woman walked out of the hospital and was found dead days in a creek not far from the hospital.
The hospital says until recently, its mental health unit wasn't locked but it will be now going forward.

Gilbert Plains Family Embarks on Brandon to Winnipeg Kayak Trip
They didn't quite make it to their goal, but a father/sons kayaking trip still went really well, according to the dad.
Gilbert Plains' Corey Pratt says he and two of his sons tried to kayak as far as they could from Brandon to Winnipeg last week. He says their time was limited, and they made it 170 kilometres to somewhere north of Holland.
He says he had a lot of fun watching his sons put to use all the things they've been taught over the years.
"...about starting fires, setting up camp, keeping track of gear. Even just setting a pace down the river that they could handle easily. That was the part that I liked."
Pratt says the trip was 5 days and 4 nights, and they camped along the way.

New Vessel Named After Norway House Ferry Operator
A new ferry is honouring a man who spent his career on Manitoba's lakes and rivers.
Gilbert Laugher worked out of Norway House for decades as a ferry operator, and the province is replacing the ferry he operated with a new one to remember him.
The new $3.1-million cable ferry Gilbert Laugher was made in Selkirk and will make its way to Norway House this summer.
Gilbert Laugher died in 2008 and began working on the SS Kenora when he was just 14 years old.

Juno Successfully Enters Jupiter's Orbit
Braving intense radiation, a NASA spacecraft reached Jupiter's orbit Monday night after a nearly five-year, 2.8-billion-kilometre voyage to begin exploring the king of the planets.
The solar-powered Juno spacecraft is now circling Jupiter on a mission to map the giant planet from the inside out.
Ground controllers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Lockheed Martin erupted in applause when Juno beamed home news that it was finally circling Jupiter's poles.
