The Manitoba Métis Federation (MMF) will be recognizing the 200th anniversary of the historic Battle of Seven Oaks with a series of commemorative and celebratory events.
The Battle of Seven Oaks was a historic confrontation between the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) and the North West Company (NWC) that took place on June 19th 1816. Both companies were rivals during the fur trade at the time with the Métis people fighting for the NWC.
The battle is often regarded by many Métis as a defining point in their history signifying themselves as a culturally distinct nation.
Minister of Housing and Property Management for the MMF Will Goodon says, "It was the first time they flew the Nation's Infinity Flag... the Métis people were able to stand up and fight for their national cultural rights."
Commemorative activities will happen this Sunday - the day of the 200th anniversary - beginning at 9:00 am in St. Francois Xavier and ending at the renewed "Battle of Seven Oaks Historical Site" around 1:30 pm.
