Dauphin's mayor says one would have to be a pessimist to think the province's new correctional centre project won't move forward.

Eric Irwin says some things are overtly political, but he doesn't think this is one of them. He says he believes the jail is necessary and things should move on as they are.

"Clearly there's a need for more jail beds, clearly there's a need to replace a hundred year old facility, and clearly if we can really find a rehabilitative solution it's going to save the taxpayers money in the long run."

The previous government had said in 2013 the new facility would provide enhanced space for programming.

The planned construction of a new correctional centre in Dauphin is under review, along with the rest of the province's capital projects. In the meantime, a government spokesperson says the jail project is progressing through the design phase while the review is completed.
