Even though they make their own snow, Asessippi Ski Area and Resort is still at the mercy of Mother Nature.

General manager Newell Johnston says due to the unseasonably warm conditions, they will be opening a week late, on December 18.

Johnston says they have been making snow for about 120 hours this season and it looks like starting Wednesday night they'll have another chance to make more.

"We've made a fair bit now, just didn't have quite enough hours from Mother Nature to be able to finish enough to get enough terrain open for our guests, so we've decided given the weather forecast that it wouldn't be possible to make it open this weekend. But we'll be making snow as soon as Mother Nature allows, probably Wednesday or Thursday."

Johnston says all kinds of things are planned for opening day.

"I'm told some are still top secret. We have a bunch of different activities."

Something new being offered at Asessippi this year is dog sledding.
