Just last week a photo was circulating via social media showing students in the morning waiting outside in the frigid cold for the school to open.

Donna Davidson, MVSD Superintendent CEO, explains what time the doors open at schools:

“Currently at all schools we don’t have supervision prior to 8:30 a.m., so many schools, if not all, communicate home to parents in a newsletter or other means of communication,” stated Davidson. “They are reminding parents that there is no supervision until after 8:30. So we strongly encourage parents not to drop their students off prior to 8:30, especially in temperatures like we have been experiencing in the last few days.”

The Public Schools Act states:  staff doesn't have to be on duty until 15 minutes prior to the start of the work day.

For those students travelling by bus, the division’s bus cancellation due to extreme cold weather kicks in at minus 45 with the wind chill.

This decision was made after consulting other divisions’ policies and noting many had the same temperature for bus cancellations.
