Following an eight-point season with the Yorkton U18 AAA Maulers in the 2019-20 season, Jayden Harris made the move to Dauphin as he joined the Kings. But his first season as a junior hockey player was very short-lived as the campaign was cancelled after just six games because of the pandemic.

So Jayden went back to Regina and hit the gym with the hope of returning to Dauphin and now, Harris is back in town. The 19-year-old has played all but one of the team’s regular-season games this year and he’s happy to be back in town.

“It feels great to be back here with the guys,” said Harris. “With last year being short, it means that much more to be back now.”

As the team is 14-4 entering another weekend home-and-home with the Swan Valley Stampeders, Harris is coming off his best offensive weekend during his time with the team. On Friday in a 5-0 win, Harris walked off the wall and fired home a beautiful shot past Kobe Grant for his first goal of the season.

The goal was also Jayden’s first-ever junior hockey goal. Then one night later, Harris set up Parker Fofonoff with Dauphin down 1-0. In the end, the Kings earned a 2-1 shootout victory as they swept the weekend series.

One goal and one assist last weekend now has Harris sitting with one goal and three assists after 17 games.

“It was a big weight off my shoulders to get that first goal, I think it was a bit overdue,” said Harris. “And on that pass to Foff, I’m just happy that I was able to get into my groove a little bit more here.”

The team is back in preparation mode. Starting Friday, the club will play four times in six days. Following their two-game set against the Stampeders, Dauphin is in Portage for the MJHL Showcase on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Since Harris first arrived in Dauphin, he was welcomed with open arms. The Carnegie family has welcomed Harris into their home and there is always lots of hockey talk while at home. Wes Carnegie is the Operations Manager for Dauphin Rec and his son plays with the Parkland U15 Rangers.

“I’ve loved every second living with the family, they opened their house to me and have been great,” said Harris. “They’re such a great family and I’m extremely lucky to be living with them while I’m here in Dauphin.”

Get to know Harris:

Favourite NHL team? The Toronto Maple Leafs. It was unfortunate when Zach Hyman left the team, I try and craft my game around him

Do you want to travel? Yeah, absolutely. I would love to see the rest of Canada like Toronto and just go anywhere

What are some of your hobbies? I love golfing in the summer and wake boarding is a big thing for me

What’s your favourite hockey memory? My first year playing U18 hockey we won the championship, I’ll never forget that. I had a bunch of buddies on the team that I grew up with

After the bantam age, there hasn't really been an outlet for girls to play hockey in the Parkland competitively in the past. However, that's changed as the Grand Plains U18 Ice Dogs female team has been created.

The team with players from all over the Parkland is playing in a seven-team league including teams from Birtle, Neepawa, Souris, Deloraine, Rock Lake, and Morden. Caitlin Fillion is the team's goaltender this year while the back end consists of Tereza Roulette of Sandy Bay, Riley Turetsky of Grandview, Ava Cole of Dauphin, Brooklyn Hramalak of Roblin, Raylyn Koshowski of Dauphin, and Crystal Zamzow of Swan River.

Alexis Campbell of Kinosota, Brooke Minshull of Grandview, KC McDonald of Dauphin, Jayselyn Nybo of Dauphin, Mackenzie Lukey of Swan River, Laura Kuysten of Roblin, Tess Bauereiss of Dropmore, Calla Tabin of Dauphin, Addison Damsgaard of Dauphin, Danika Gingera of Dauphin, Ashley Shiner of Ethelbert, and Lauren Vaters of Dauphin are the team's forwards.

The team has two wins, one of which was an exhibition victory and they're 1-2 in league play.

"The spread of players from around the Parkland area is very nice, it's a great opportunity for these girls to play female hockey," said Craig Zamzow, head coach. "We're pretty happy with how things have gone so far. We have some new players that are learning the ropes and our veterans are helping them a lot. It's been a great start."

Dwayne Damsgaard and Lindsay Tabin are the team's assistant coaches, Wendy McDonald is the team's Manager, Renee Minshull is the team's Safety Person and Jami Turetsky takes care of Communications.

Next up for the team is a game in Souris next Sunday. Their next home league game is on Saturday, January 8 when they welcome the Morden Hawks to Grandview. They also play the Parkland U15 Rangers on Wednesday, December 22 in Grandview.

This is the team's remaining schedule.

Zamzow says the team continues to improve every practice and game and he's looking forward to that continuing.

"We have some players that hadn't played centre before and they're getting that chance now," said Zamzow. "The younger players haven't played at this pace before and they're getting better every day. We're looking forward to an enjoyable rest of the season and hopefully, development is key."

Week 10 of the MJHL season is just a few days away and junior hockey fans have certainly been treated to some great hockey so far.

The West Division is led by the Dauphin Kings who have 28 points while the Waywayseecappo Wolverines are just two points behind. And with a new weekend of hockey just days away, just two points separate third place from sixth place.

Over in the East Division, the action is just as hot with the Steinbach Pistons sitting on top with their 29 points, one more than the Winnipeg Blues. The Blues swept Steinbach this past weekend; however, the Pistons earned a point on Saturday as they came back from 3-1 down to force overtime.

The battle for third and fourth is very tight while there is some separation from the bottom two teams in the league, the Portage Terriers and Winnipeg Freeze.

Kevin Saurette, Commissioner of the MJHL says it's been a great season so far.

"It's been amazing to see, one of our strong points over the years has been the parody across the league," said Saurette. "It comes down to the coaching staffs and the players, they have all week to prepare for their games."

Following another weekend full of action, all 12 teams will head to Portage for the MJHL Player Showcase which runs next Monday to Wednesday.

We've also added two games to this year's broadcast schedule, as Darnell Duff will broadcast both Kings games from the Showcase on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Parkland Source for Sports pregame show will begin at 4:15 on both days.

"It's going to be an extremely elite and competitive environment for scouts and fans," ended Saurette. "This is the first time that teams will play out of their division, so that's exciting as well. It will bring out the best in everyone."

The Grand Plains Hawks are B-Side champions as the season is well underway.

Hosting their tournament, the U11 team put together a great weekend. In the finals, the team downed The Pas.

They also took down Roblin.

The Dauphin Kings are climbing in the Canadian Junior Hockey League’s Top 20 Rankings.

One week after they were ranked 19th, Dauphin is now ranked 14th in Canada.

Dauphin is tied for second in the league, just one point behind the Steinbach Pistons who dropped both of their games this past weekend; however, they did earn a point in an overtime loss on Saturday.

Next up for Dauphin is another home-and-home against the Stampeders, starting on Friday at the Centennial.

After this weekend, Dauphin will take on the top two teams in the East Division at the league’s showcase next week at Stride Place in Portage la Prairie.
