Manitoba Hydro Rate Increases over Next 7 Years

Manitoba Hydro says it will need annual power rate increases of seven-point-nine per cent for the next seven years to meet its financial targets.

The Crown utility had previously said it would need the annual hikes over a five-year period, but the company has revised its outlook after its requested seven-point-nine-per-cent boost was turned down in July by the province's Public Utilities Board.

Hydro president Kelvin Shepherd says the corporation needs to improve its cash flow and improve its debt-equity ratio to place it on solid financial footing and prevent the need for even higher rate hikes in the future.

The P-U-B will hold public hearings from December 4th to February 9th on Hydro's general rate application for this year and next.
