You Can Get Your Boat Checked For Invasive Aquatic species Today

Invasive aquatic species are the focus of a boat inspection going on right now!
From 1 until 7 Riding Mountain National Park will be at the Dauphin Market Place Mall parking lot just south of Boston Pizza. They are inspecting and decontaminating any boats found with invasive species such as zebra muscles. The Park is hoping to give the same level of service in Dauphin today as if vessels were being inspected in Wasagaming. Bob Ray Side the safety coordinator  in Riding Mountain National Park talks about the where the program came from and how it works

"2014 we developed the program it’s based off of the Minnesota model it was adopted by the province of Manitoba as well as Riding Mountain National Park. What it consists of if inspections of vessels to see if there are any invasive species on them, as well as decontamination program. So essentially what we are doing is if the vessel has been contaminated with aquatic invasive species were treating them to kill any of those species so they can’t get into waters in the park."

In 2015 Riding Mountain National Park conducted 24,000 inspections and decontaminated 49. In 2016 34,000 inspections were conducted and they decontaminated 149.
