MUSIC NEWS: BOOKS-GILLER-THEREMIN Have you ever heard the theremin being played? No, it's not the trilling whistle surfing through the Beach Boys' ``Good Vibrations'' -- that was a Tannerin, or electro-theremin. Nor was the theremin used for the quivering birdsong through the theme from ``Star Trek.'' That was the voice of studio soprano Loulie Jean Norman. The theremin is seen as a mystery of an instrument, a magic trick to play. And Sean Michaels, who wrote a Scotiabank Giller Prize-nominated novel inspired in part by the theremin, admits he's basically terrible at playing it. Michaels acquired two of the instruments for himself, but concedes -- quote -- ``I'm incompetent.'' AC/DC-MOST SERIOUS CHARGE DROPPED IN CASE AGAINST PHIL RUDD UNDATED (AP) -- New Zealand prosecutors have done an about-face and dropped a murder-for-hire charge against AC/DC drummer Phil Rudd. Officials tell The Associated Press the charge has been dropped due to…
Don't miss out on seeing Ontario based JUNO Award winning band The Strumbellas play the Watson Art Centre this Sunday night at 8 pm. Doors open at 7:30 pm. Winnipeg's amazing Crooked Brothers will open the show. Tickets are still available from the Fidddlelore Store, Dauphin Music & Electronics and at the WAC (between noon and 5 pm weekdays). Charge by phone at 204.638.6231. The Strumbellas is a Juno-award winning, six-piece Canadian band, whose music has been described as alternative country, indie rock, and "folk popgrass". The Crooked Brothers are home-brewed. They play homegrown, homemade music. Both gritty and pretty at once – their take on folk, on blues, rock or anything they turn their hands to can’t be said to be anything but their own. Sometimes it’s as simple as three sweet harmonies, or a single harmonica holding the whole room at attention, and sometimes things growl and shake…

She'll visit Ottawa's Canadian Tire Centre on July 6 before hitting Montreal's Bell Centre the next night. She'll begin August with a show at Vancouver's cavernous B.C. Place Stadium before hitting Edmonton for a pair of dates at Rexall Place Aug. 4-5. Swift's final Canadian stops are Oct. 2 and 3 next year at Toronto's Rogers Centre. She'll have Canadian viral star Shawn Mendes along for the ride, with Australian singer-songwriter Vance Joy rounding out the tour's lineup of opening acts. (The Canadian Press)
