Tanya Tagaq has won the 2013 Polaris Music Prize for her album Animism besting the nine other albums on the Polaris Short List. The Inuk throat singer performed an intense version of her song “Uja” accompanied by a 40-member choir during the Polaris Gala. “We’ve been doing it our own way without backing down artistically or conforming, so to be recognized in this way and have so many people latch on makes me feel the world is tolerable,” said Tagaq in a statement. “There’s so much hurt in the world and within indigenous cultures with colonialism. Canada is in a desperate need for repair and I think a lot of people are tired of living this way and just to have people understand where we’re coming from makes me have hope that we can move forward and expose the true history of Canada.” The Prize, which goes to the best…

New music from Pink Floyd out November 10th

Pink Floyd's new album will arrive on Nov. 10. A Monday news release gives fresh details about ``The Endless River,'' the British rock 'n' roll group's first new material in 20 years. The 18-song double album features band members David Gilmour, Nick Mason and Richard Wright, who died in 2008. Roger Waters left the group in 1985 and isn't involved. The album was assembled from 20 hours of material recorded during the band's 1993 sessions for ``The Division Bell.'' Gilmour says in the release that the band ``added new parts, rerecorded others and generally harnessed studio technology to make a 21st-century Pink Floyd album.'' ``The Endless River'' is comprised mostly of instrumental music with just one song, ``Louder Than Words,'' that includes new lyrics, written by Gilmour's wife, Polly Samson.
