Cool Weather Helps Fight Manitoba Fires
Cooler conditions have been helping crews battling wildfires in Manitoba.
Manitoba Sustainable Development says a wildfire northeast of Caddy Lake on the Ontario boundary remained at approximately 5,800 hectares yesterday and was more than 50 per cent contained.
The Beresford Lake fire remained about 75,000 hectares and was also close to 50 per cent contained.
Improved conditions have allowed provincial travel and burning permit restrictions in eastern Manitoba to be lifted, but municipalities may still have their own restrictions.
Two Charged in Winnipeg Murder
Two people face charges in the shooting death of a Winnipeg man.
Twenty-nine-year-old George Prieston was rushed to hospital after being found in a home in critical condition on Thursday, but he didn't survive.
Shawn Poitra and Raymond Ducharme, both 25, face first-degree murder charges and remain in custody.
Police say they also face animal cruelty charges.
Rancher Says Earls Controversy Shows People Care
Alberta rancher Ben Campbell says the recent Earls restaurant beef controversy shows that people care about where their food comes from.
And he says Canadian farmers should be proud to showcase how they produce their beef.
The Vancouver-based restaurant chain announced last month that it would only serve beef with the American-based Certified Humane designation but quickly backtracked after an uproar on social media.
There are several similar programs in Canada, so ranchers can verify their meat was raised humanely.
Fort McMurray App
The Alberta government warns that viewing the images on its new app for Fort McMurray residents may be traumatic.
Municipal Affairs Minister Danielle Larivee has included the number for Alberta's Mental Health Help Line on her news release.
The maps are intended to provide a high-level satellite overview of the status of the city.
Larivee says more detailed images to be released soon should be detailed enough to help property owners with insurance claims.
Ontario Premier to Sign Middle East Agreements
Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne says she plans to "exchange knowledge and sign agreements'' during a week-long trade mission to the Middle East.
Wynne and a delegation of government officials, business and academic leaders head to the region today.
The agenda includes stops in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv and Ramallah.
Delegates include Jewish-focused business and organizations looking to strengthen their ties to the region.
